BRONZEVILLE

This house was completely vacant, abandoned and derelict when the homeowner bought it from the City of Chicago. After jumping through hoops and obstacles, the City of Chicago Preservation Commission construction began. Unlike the average renovation project, this project was more of a home rescue than a home renovation! Floors and roofs were so unstable many had to be torn out and replaced before anyone could even access those levels. The front façade was landmarked and everything had to be brought back to its original glory. Including that massive 2 story copper bay on the front of the building. The original plan was to make repairs and reseal that copper bay and move along. However, closer inspection revealed the copper held on with hopes and wishes and completely rotten lumber supports. In the end it could not be saved. But painstaking molds were made of every piece of that bay so an exact replica could be produced and installed on the house – a little more securely this time.

Entire intricate staircases had been removed from the home over the years and artisans were brought in to recreate every piece and ensure the 4-story elegant staircase matched the original woodwork and reflects the new life breathed into this elegant home. Floors, walls, ceilings, fireplaces, stairs, electric, plumbing and heating and air were all replaced while keeping the vintage details of this landmarked property intact.

In the end, 4 full stories of neglect and grime were removed, refurbished and replaced. And the end result is a show stopper. Working with the Landmark Commission presented its own set of challenges but upon completion, 42nd Place was the only single-family residence awarded the Preservation Award by the City of Chicago. A historic home up to date while preserving its vintage charm and detail is no easy feat! A truly award-winning project.
